Urho Kekkosen s Elzou - day 8

#hiking #Lapland #Urhokekossen #Hikingselzou #Finland

Loučení a pak navrat do civilizace. Pizza s medvědem a teplé postele

Balime a pak spolecne kousek. Heidi s Karim jdou do Kalipaa, kde mají auto a pokoj na noc a zitra směřují domu. My míříme do Sariselka, kde dnes máme pokoj a zítra se busem přesuneme do Rovaniemi.

Heidi a Kari, díky za společný čas a povídání. Bylo to moc fajn.

Pak už jen cca hoďku a půl do Sariselka. Cestou potkáváme spoustu faborku a cedulí s trasami nejspíš zítřejšího trail runu. Nektere trasy maji i 50km.

Hi Michal! It was very nice to read your story at the UKK. We're also so glad we met:) and have been talking about you. What a cosy evening we had at the Rumakuru cottage! After my Traumpfad I naturally spoke a lot of it (as you know!), and also about the people I met there. The last 4 days I walked with a german man and we had so much fun and also great conversations. We also encouraged each other while walking in hot weather the rest less interesting 100 km's on the flat land of Veneto. I think after we met at the UKK, also Kari can better imagine the meaning and importance of trail mates. You know what I mean?

I also red your Pallas-Ylläs and Menorca stories. And started to read the PCT. Well there's a lot to go through 😅 But it wouldn't be the first story I read about PCT, you know that I would be eager to walk that through if my hips weren't so bad.

I also checked the www-sites of Nalehko. Would like to book a shirt or jacket made of polartec alpha. I've seen that kind of shirts on long distance hikers, and as I see, the ones of Nalehko are not so expensive. And you made good advertisement, worth buying, right? I tried Elsa's jacket on. Can you check the size of that please? Maybe I'll order one.

So Michal, our best wishes to you and Elsa, you can be proud of her, not every 20 years old girl wants to spend a week in the middle of nowhere in Lapland, with sometimes cold and wet feet. As I said already, WELL DONE!

Hi Heidi,

Thanks again for reaching out – it really was so wonderful meeting you both!

Yes, I know exactly what you mean. It’s a bit of an 'occupational hazard' for us long-distance hikers, and it’s truly hard to explain to anyone who hasn’t experienced it firsthand. But from what I saw of Kari, I think he genuinely gets it. You have great support in him.

I'm really keeping my fingers crossed that you find a way to sort out your hip issues. And even if a full thru-hike isn't in the cards... as I mentioned, section hiking is a great option too – even though with the PCT, all the traveling doesn't make it the cheapest route!

Regarding the Aspiring jacket – you made me laugh, maybe I really should ask Nalehko for a commission! :D But seriously: the Aspiring is absolutely fantastic and was honestly one of my most useful pieces of gear on the entire PCT.

If you tried on the one Eliška was wearing, that was actually mine – so it’s a men’s size XL. For you, the women’s version would definitely be a much better fit:
* Either size L, if mine felt a bit too loose or roomy,
* or women’s XL, if the fit felt just about right.

You might also want to consider another option that Nalehko offers: instead of the 2-in-1 jacket (Aspiring), you can get two separate layers – specifically the standalone insulating layer (Alpha Hoody) and their wind jacket (Nalehko Neprofuk / windbreaker). It ends up slightly more expensive, but it’s arguably even more versatile since you can mix and match each piece depending on the conditions.

As for Eliška – yes, I’m incredibly proud of her. I was so happy she chose to spend that week with me in Lapland, even though the temperatures were well outside her usual comfort zone. But I think the stunning ruska season made up for any occasional cold or discomfort.

We wish you both a wonderful autumn and truly hope this wasn’t the last time we crossed paths. I’ll definitely let you know when I'm planning my next trip to Lapland (which is 100% happening!). Hopefully the timing works out and we meet up out there again – or maybe we'll take a slight detour and drop by for a cup of tea. See? I don't just do gear promos, I also invite myself over! :D

Take care,
Michal

Hi Michal, it was good to hear from you 😊

Well I don't know about hiking just parts of some specific trail, somehow I find it more dramatic or mentally fullfilling to walk the whole path througg, all the way with ups and downs. My next long distance walk will propably take me to the Alps again. It could be the Walker's Haute Route (200 km, Chamonix - Zermat) or Adlerweg (390 km in Austria), or why not Kungsleden in Sweden. But the trails in the States sound so incredibly fascinating! PCT is for sure not forgotten. Maybe after getting new artificial hip joints... who knows. Or if I get Kari to join me.

You could definately mention to Nalehko that you both appeared as walking Nalehko fashion models in Lapland. Absolutely worth of discount ;)
Aspiring or Alpha hoody (+ Neprofuk), I'll think about it. Was your hoody actually 60 or 120? I have to admit, I have a certain weakness when it comes to amazing and high-quality trekking gear...

Michal please let us know when ever you plan your next trip to Lapland, could recommend you some trails or areas there depending on what you're searching for. What immediately comes to mind is Kilpisjärvi. UKK is also a wide national park, there still is a lot to see. Last time I went there with my sister (june 2024), we left at Aittajärvi and we headed for the Sokosti fell/mountain, had great views. And Kari (ages ago) set off at Rajajooseppi with his friend, and walked through Anteri and turned back at Kiilopää.
So let us know, it would be great to meet up again, in Lapland or elsewhere! And if you were to drop by for tea we would not only offer you and your folks a cup of tea, but also a bed.
So let us hear from you!

Hi Heidi,
I know exactly what you mean—a thru-hike is just a thru-hike! Your trail ideas sound amazing; you really can’t go wrong with any of them, and the Adlerweg is definitely quite a challenge.
Kilpisjärvi is definitely on my radar. I’ve checked it out on the map multiple times already, so it looks like a very likely destination for my next trek. Thanks a lot for the tip!
I’ll definitely let you know as soon as the trip takes concrete shape and we have a realistic timeframe. Take care and have a wonderful time!
